An 18th century English band sampler, worked by Hana Chamberlin

Embroidered in coloured silks on a linen ground in eyelet, cross and other stitches, with the alphabet in upper and lower case above the inscription …

‘This work in hand / my friends may / have when I am dead / and laid in grave’ 

…followed by a row of crowns, and the inscription…

‘I love the Lord / and he will be a / tender Father unto me’

…the numbers from 1 to 10, and the name, age and date…

‘Hana·Chamberlin / Aged·9·years / 1757’

…and another rendering of the alphabet above a chevron band, all interspersed with further crowns, and hearts and acorns.

A Hannah Chamberlin is recorded as having been born in 1748 in the village of West Leake, Nottinghamshire, to George Chamberlin and Elizabeth Shirley.

The sampler 53.3cm (21”) high and 15.2cm (6”) wide.

Mounted, and in a frame 60cm (23⅝”) high and 21cm (8¼”) wide.
