An English crewelwork hanging
First half of the 20th century
The worsted embroidery on a linen twill ground finely worked in a variety of stitches including long and short, stem, chain, coral, trellis, couched laid work, French knots and speckling, with exotic birds and butterflies amid flowers, leaves, acorns, and cherries borne on the curling branches of a tree that grows from rolling hillocks with a stag and a squirrel among short flowering stems and strawberries. With the initials ‘AHB’, and the date ‘1940’. Edged with braid and backed with blue linen.
