An extremely fine late 17th or early 18th century English embroidered picture

Worked in coloured silk threads in long and short stitch and metal thread on a satin ground with a deer hunt, the male and female riders and their two hounds chasing over rolling ground past trees and flowers and beneath birds and insects. The composition is related to that of a 17th century etching, ‘Le Roy à la Chasse du Cerf avec les Dames’, after a painting by Adam-Frans Van der Meulen (1632-1690), one copy of which is in the collection of the British Museum, number 1869,0410.1896; and to a late 17th century Beauvais tapestry, ‘The Stag Hunt’, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number: 53.188.

The satin panel 26.3cm (10⅜”) high and 26.4cm (10⅜”) wide, under a craquelure mount in a gilt frame 34cm (13⅜”) high and 37.5cm (14¾”) wide.
