A 17th century English needlework picture, with an embroidered silk border.

The design of the main scene is adapted from that of the tapestry ‘Psyche Discovers Cupid’ from the set of ‘The History of Cupid and Psyche', designed by Giovanni Battista Castello (1509-1569), and based on the stories included in ‘The Golden Ass’, by Lucius Apuleius. The border has ovals at each corner depicting Cupid in various settings, with the intermediate spaces filled with embroidered animals and flowers.
