A 16th century Flemish tapestry panel

Woven in Oudenaarde or Enghien, circa 1550-1580

In silk and wool with a throned and crowned figure beneath a blue draped canopy supported by marble columns, and in front of spear bearing soldiers. The pose of the central figure was used in Flemish tapestries throughout the second half of the 16th century to represent characters of authority, wisdom or justice in the depiction of episodes taken from various historical, biblical or mythological sources; and the same original might be adapted to stand for Scipio, Alexander, Solomon, Ahasuerus, Jehoram, Pharoah, Holophernes or Priam.
