An 18th century English needlework picture

Circa 1730-1750

Worked in silk and wool in cross stitch and petit point, a blue and white urn decorated with a band of floral sprays above a figure holding a parasol and a flower and walking past a palm tree towards a house, the urn with a gadrooned waist and handles formed of scrolled snakes with barbed tails, and filled with flowers including jonquil, iris, rose, carnation, and sunflower, against a turquoise ground.

A needlework panel of comparable design is fitted to a firescreen and on view in Gallery 753 of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, obj. no. 52.167.

The needlework 65.3cm (25¾”) high and 57cm (22⅜”) wide.

In a frame 75.3cm (29⅝”) high and 67.4cm (26½”) wide.
