A length of 18th century Spitalfields silk

Circa 1735

The cream taffeta ground with twill bound supplementary green lampas weft and brocade wefts in coral, terracotta, blue, ochre and purple, forming a repeating ‘Naturalistic’ design of large roses, pomegranates, leaves and smaller flowers.

A silk of comparable design, and of the same narrow width and identical construction, is in the collection of the V & A, acc. no. CIRC.277-1935.

Bordered with antique silver braid, in a rosewood veneer frame.

The frame backboard has numerous inscriptions relating to the silk’s provenance, and possible origin as a part of the wedding dress of Ann Harrison (see images below).

The silk 100.5cm (39.5”) long and 41.5cm (16⅜”) wide.

The frame 107.5cm (42⅜”) high and 51.5cm (20¼”) wide.
