A 17th century tapestry border fragment

Circa 1640-1660

Woven in silk and wool with a golden cherub amid volutes, a leafy swag and a blue ribbon. Border elements of this type were common to tapestries woven throughout Europe in the middle of the 17th century; this is closely related to versions produced in the various workshops of Brussels and Bruges.

Bordered with antique silver braid and mounted on a stretcher.

50.8cm (20”) high and 21.2cm (8⅜”) wide.
