A panel of late 19th century toile
The cotton printed in blue with a scene of a naval battle and an angler above another of a fortified eastern harbour with turbanned figures, and stevedores moving victuals, barrels and cannon. Some of the groups of figures, architectural elements and vessels are adapted from sections of the paintings that make up Claude-Joseph Vernet’s series of ‘Vues des ports de France’. In the manner of late 18th century French commemorative toiles.
Bordered with galon and backed with cotton.
