England, last quarter of the 15th century

Christ is depicted here as in many Gothic representations of the Last Judgement, seated on a rainbow arc with a seraph at each end, his palms raised and his wounds displayed and a crossed halo around his head. Embroidered in coloured silks in split stitch, satin stitch and laid silk with trellis couching, and silver threads in brick stitch, eyelet stitch and underside couching, on a linen ground. The figure probably decorated the hood of a cope. With losses to the silk.

Now laid on a panel of 16th century blue linen, and framed.

The textile 25.4cm (10”) high and 19.5cm (7⅝”) wide, in a gilt frame 40cm (15¾”) high and 31.6cm (12½”) wide.
