A 16th century orphrey band
Spanish or Italian, circa 1560-1590
The ground worked in burgundy silk long and short stitch and with applied vines, rosettes and leaves in gold thread satin stitch with some among these motifs padded, raised and covered with silver thread and blue or nué, the applied border of gold thread stitched and raised over cord.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art has a set of three 16th century orphrey panels of saints (object numbers 1975.1.2448, 49, & 50) with the surrounding grounds similarly stitched and with comparable delicately drawn foliate motifs.
